But during the time frame mentioned, we had to ride what we had, and 3 wheelers were still holding their own, esp. Hence Honda released the 400EX in the fall of '98 labled as a 1999 model. But these youngsters gotta remember, which I didn't know until just lately, the reason no sport machines were allowed to be produced was from some 10 year law spanning from 1988-1998, right after they banned 3 wheelers. Usually neck and neck when drag racing my buddy on his 400EX when he first got one in the spring of 2000. Once it was re-machined and rebuilt, ran like a champ. Had my 350X rebuilt in 2000, and yes, the cam journal was shot, prob due to little or any maint. Was never a fan of 2 strokes, to me they just weren't made for the "coal region" here in PA. Still was on 3 wheels, didn't even buy my first 4 wheeler until 2003, I know the Honda 250R was probably the best quad of all time, actually never rode one. Gotta open the history book for all the youngsters, no sport quads at the time, only Banshee's and Warriors, and in my opinion, they weren't the best offered. I feel your pain fella, started out on ATC's in the 80's, (yes I'm old!) Had an 87 200X, my favorite machine, got a well used 86 350X in 1997, like you said, I was the 3rd owner at the time, and the machine was not well maintained or taken care of. None of us ever had problems with the heads.I owed that same 85 350X up untill a few years back when my ex-wife stole it.never once had to replace the head becuase of oiling issues.ģ50X heads get destroyed because people did poor maintenence or used crappy oil's We lived way out in the country so dirt road riding was the norm.all day 6th gear wide open, two of my friends are wheelie guys could go as long as they wanted to, through all the gears. Me and a bunch of my friends bought our 350X's brand new, I had the 85 they had the 86's. The head is discontinued(for 10 years) and commands a high buck. Revving it high(extended times), extended wheelies and revving it so high until you shift are the primary reasons for the oiling failure. 350x's have a problems with top end oiling, in 86 it got better, but not solved. When you check it, there is a very important thing to look at: if it smokes at all, there is a good chance that the cam journal is gone or valve seals/trane needs work.
